Murchison Falls National Park was established in 1952 together with queen Elizabeth national park and covers a surface area of 1,503 square miles (3893km2) making it the largest national park in Uganda, the park falls under the umbrella of Murchison Falls Conservation Area [MFCA] which comprises of Murchison Falls National Park, Bugunga and Karuma Falls wildlife reserves. The park has over 76 species of mammals and 451 birds. Most Uganda Safaris include a visit to Murchison Falls National Park which is Uganda’s oldest and largest national park.
The park is located in the northern region of the Albertine Rift Valley in Masindi district of western Uganda situated 300km by road northwest of Kampala. The Murchison Falls also known as Kabarega Falls is where the Nile bursts through the narrow gorge and spreads down to a placid stream flowing into Lake Albert. Hippos, crocodiles and water bucks throng the banks of the stream.
Murchison Falls National Park has got a spectacular view with the huge waterfalls roaring and finding their way within the small slit of 7 meters or 23 feet wide between the rocks and this is the connect point of Bunyoro escarpment and Acholi plains. Also in the park adjacent to the Masindi-Gulu high way are the magnificent Karuma Falls.
Tourism activities in Murchison falls national park range from game drives which gives you an opportunity to explore the park and enjoy great views of wildlife species like elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, kobs, Jackson’s heartbeats, oribi, warthogs and many more. Game drives are done in 4WD safari vehicles and these are categorized into three. Morning game drives, evening and night game drives which start after dinner and visitors are always accompanied by the park rangers. Night game drives gives chance to visitors to view nocturnal animals in the park and these include lions, hyenas, civet, bush babies, night jar, leopard’s, porcupines and grazers such as hippos, elephants and waterbucks. Boat cruise is also one of the interesting activities carried out in Murchison falls national park and these are divided into two, the morning boat cruise at starts at 9:00amand afternoon boat cruise that starts at 2:00pm and take about three hours as it takes up to the bottom of the falls as this gives tou chance to view the Nile crocodiles, aquatic birds and different animals which come to the river to water. Watchiching is also done in the park since the park has over 450 species including migratory birds, Albertine rift endemic birds, savannah birds and water bird. In Murchison there are four of the big five; buffalos, lions, elephants and leopards are mostly seen in the northern part.
